That’s a Wrap! Outlander Celebrates the Completion of Filming Season 3

Outlander cast and crew celebrated end of filming season 3 today. Now it’s on to the editing room.

Outlander season 3 will follow Diana Gabaldon’s 3rd book in the Outlander series titled Voyager. A good number of book fans will tell you that Voyager was one of their favorite books including myself.

Warning may contain spoilers!

Voyager begins right after battle of Culloden between the British and the Scots. At Jamie’s insistence Claire has went back though the stone to 1948 because she was carrying Jamie’s unborn child and he wanted to protect her from the battle. One of the reason’s this is a favorite book is that it tells of Jamie and Claire’s lives without each other for 20 years. When Claire discovers that Jamie didn’t die on Culloden battlefield and she decides to go back through the stones to reunite with him.

This reunion is one of the most anticipated events for season 3 by fans and is referred to as The Printshop scene.

Outlander writer, Diana Gabaldon confirmed herself that the Printshop scene meets with her approval.

To which she replied

Other scenes fans are looking forward to are the Brothel, & Turtle Soup. There are far too many good scenes in this book and fans are hoping that they don’t get put on the cutting room floor.

So today was the last day of Outlander filming and Twitter lit up like a jar full of lighting bugs you caught on a summer’s evening. Here are some of the happenings across social media today.

After Roark gyms in South Africa announced that Sam would be doing a Facebook live with them he posted on Twitter the following.

Caitriona sent out a thank you to the crew for all their hard work.

All writer/producer Matt Roberts had to say was…

No wonder the man is tired he’s work is never done.

Caitriona says this season has been like birthing a baby. Which is appropriate since her character Claire does give birth in season 3.

It’s a wrap party birth pool

Frank and Black Jack Randall might be around as long as #Outlander is — and we don’t necessarily hate it

We already know that we’ll be seeing more Frank (Tobias Menzies) in Season 3 of Outlander than book fans would expect, but it may not be the last we see of Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) first husband, or his evil 18th century ancestor.

Diana Gabaldon’s book Voyager, on which the third season is based, is the last time Claire is in the 1900s. That means there aren’t a lot of pages of Frank’s story left in the book series. The show will already expand on Frank’s presence by exploring what Claire’s life was like with Frank after she returned through the rocks before the Battle of Culloden — pregnant with Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) child — more deeply.

It’s a period that Outlander executive producer Ron Moore says is necessary to understand who Claire is when she learns that Jamie survived Culloden 20 years after the fact.

Tobias Menzies, OutlanderTobias Menzies, Outlander

“The story requires [Frank]’s presence. Claire, from the beginning, was married to Frank and spent the entire first book trying to get back to him,” Moore explained to TVGuide.com at the ATX Television Festival in Austin. “She’s found the love of her life in Jamie Fraser, but there’s still this man that has this hold on her so she feels like she needs to go back. That to me says that’s a really strong character and an important character. To understand Claire, you need to understand the nature of that relationship with Frank.”

Frank remains an important part of the story in Season 3 as we have to learn who Claire and their daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) have become in the time they spent with him in Boston.

“When she returns to the 20th century, Frank raises Brianna. Again, he’s a very important figure in the story,” Moore said. “He is the father figure that Brianna knew as opposed to Jamie. Claire spent 20 years with him before he died. We needed to bring that part of the story forward to really understand how all these things work.”

Voyager marks the last serious mentions of Frank and his 18th century counterpart Black Jack Randall in the Outlander book series. Frank dies in the 1960s and Black Jack is fated to die in the same battle Jamie survives. However, Season 3 may not be the last we see of Claire’s first husband or the man who terrorized her and her husband in the past.

Moore admits that is in part because actor Tobias Menzies does such a tremendous job inhabiting both roles. The show isn’t afraid to embrace future mentions of either character as a chance to bring Menzies back in later seasons.

Outlander Season 3 Spoilers: Claire and Jamie Will Be Apart for a While at the Start of the Season

“Droughtlander” might be ending in under three months, but that doesn’t mean that Outlanderfans are going to see their favorite couple back together when the show returns.

Outlander last left off with Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) separated by 200 years of history. Claire had returned to the 1940s before the Battle of Culloden to protect their unborn child while Jamie went back to fight with his countrymen and presumably die.

It took Claire 20 years in her own timeline to discover that Jamie had managed to live through the bloody battle. She ended the Season 2 finale declaring to her now adult daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) that they have to go back to find Jamie. Unfortunately, the search for him will not be that easy.

“We’re going to keep them apart for a while,” executive producer Ron Moore teased to TVGuide.com at the ATX Television Festival in Austin.

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, OutlanderCaitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, OutlanderClaire and Jamie’s separation tracks with how Diana Gabaldon’s third book in the Outlanderseries, on which the show is based, plays out. Moore admits that some structural changes are being made to the story, but reuniting Claire and Jamie right off the bat is not one of them.

“The majority of the major events are in the season, but we are probably going to reorder them and present them slightly differently,” Moore said. “The third book is a clean narrative as opposed to the second book –which was a very complicated narrative. It still went to Jamie’s storyline for a very long time and then Claire catches up.”

The beginning of the season will do a lot to fill in the story of Claire’s life with Frank (Tobias Menzies) in Boston after she returned through the stones at the end of Season 2.

“One of the things we wanted to do was talk about what Claire was doing in those 20 years as well,” Moore said. “The way we’ve structured the season allows you to experience both [Jamie and Claire’s lives] at the same time.”

That may sound like terrible news to some fans, but luckily Claire will have some assistance in finding her way back to Jamie. Brianna and Roger (Richard Rankin) will be there to help her figure out what Jamie was doing in Scotland after he escaped the battle. Helping Claire will also help bring the young lovebirds closer together.

Is it September yet??? Outlander Filming Nearly Finished!

Anticipation is growing among the Outlander fandom as cast and crew take to social media. It’s always fun to see the banter going on between them as not only does it let the fans know little tidbits but it also shows the camaraderie between them all. One big happy Outlander family 😊

I’ve put together several posts and pictures posted that will surly have fans wishing summer was over already and September was here.

So here goes…

Recently Sam posted they were filming the penultimate which is the next to the last episode for the season

I can only imagine what we’ll be seeing when this airs but I really don’t want to think about that episode just yet because when it does air that will mean just 1 more episode 😢

Maril Davis, one of Outlander’s executive producer’s posted this photos of eggs made up to be Jamie & Claire on the beach that she and Caitriona drew. Can you guess who drew which one? 😂

And Sam replied…

Maril’s brother made this remark on her art skills…LOL

Well…Maril it was a good effort 🤦🏻‍♀️

Just like a man all Sam could think about was his stomach 😂😂😂

To be honest I’m not sure why Maril would need such a wintery hat when they are shooting in South Africa. Let me check the weather there BRB. Nope I wouldn’t see why she would need that but hey to each his/her own.🤷🏻‍♀️ At any rate Sam wants to borrow it 😆

I suppose he needs this for when they go back to Scotland & Maril says it’s his if he wants it.

Writer/Producer Matt Roberts also posts some of the most beautiful photos from Cape Town, SA

Before the storm #capetown #capestorm #stormofthecentury Wish us luck #outlander

A post shared by Matthew B. Roberts (@nofoolingproductions) on

Sam retweeted this picture of the recent Cape Town storm Matt was referring too.

Funny there should be a storm right when they are most likely shooting scenes that include a storm also. Sam referred to that early when he stated he had sand in places it shouldn’t be…hehehe

They are at the end of shooting season 3 with only about a week left according to Sam’s tweet.

To which Sam replys:

Filming maybe complete but there is still a lot that goes on behind the scenes after the shoot is over.

Sam says Cait is willing to lend a hand with editing if Matt needs it.

I don’t know about you but I think they better leave the theme & music in the hands of Bear McCreary. He hasn’t let us Outlander fans down yet with his choices. So Cait you needn’t worry about dragging out your accordion just yet.

Outlander season 3 and the curious case of Jamie’s hug

Who would’ve imagined that Jamie’s hug would stir up so much conversation in the Outlander community?

The moment occurs at around the 27-second mark in the new season 3 teaser, and this is admittedly something that we haven’t touched on too much as of yet. There was so much other stuff going on with the teaser (we’ve already written almost a thousand words on it), and there are a few moments as a non-book reader that don’t strike us in the same way that they do people with a vast knowledge of the source material. After all, there is another level in which readers can scour the teaser and identify key moments.

Since writing that article, we’ve started to take the temperature of the room (i.e. much of the internet), and realized even further just how significant this hug truly is. Specifically, it’s the who in it that is stirring up so much discussion. (Warning: There are some minor book spoilers ahead.)

One of the big prevailing theories at first regarding the hug was that he was embracing Marsali, Laoghaire’s daughter. However, this is a thought that was already debunked on Facebook by author Diana Gabaldon. (It makes some sense, given that Marsali may be a little older than the person in the hug appears to be when Jamie meets her.) Then, there was another theory out there that it was William, the son of Jamie and Geneva Dunsany. However, Gabaldon has also debunked that notion.

While it may be easy to assume that the person above is a young girl, the fashion of the time, especially for children of a certain age, was rather androgynous. Therefore, this could very well be a boy, and there is really no proof to suggest otherwise. This may be a small mystery in context of the larger story, but it’s an interesting one nonetheless since this embrace places Jamie within a specific frame of time.

Showrunner Ron Moore Does Outlander S3 Q&A

Outlander showrunner Ron D. Moore surprised the fans with an impromptu Twitter Q&A tonight.
As usually questions started flying in as soon as he made announcement.

Here’s what we’re desperate to know about ‘Outlander’ Season 3

Because we’re not half as good at time travel as Claire Fraser, we won’t get to see any new episodes of Outlander until September, which means we have a few empty months in which to occupy ourselves with wild speculation until the droughtlander is officially over.

We’ve already discussed what we know about Season 3 of Outlander so far, so let’s talk about what we don’t know, and what we hope to find out when Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) finally return to our screens.

Of course, if you’ve read the third novel in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, Voyager, you know a lot about what the new season has in store (I’m right there with you) — although that doesn’t mean showrunner Ron Moore and his cohorts won’t throw in some deviations from the source material, just to keep us on our toes. In the interests of letting non-book fans play along, we’re going to pretend that Voyager is not readily available to sate our curiosity, and just go with what we’ve seen on the show so far.

1. How long will we have to wait for Claire and Jamie’s reunion?

Season 2 ended with Claire, now around 50 years old, deciding to go back through the Standing Stones to try and reunite with Jamie after 20 years apart — but we know that Season 3 will feature flashbacks to catch us up with what the duo got up to during those two decades without each other.

Does that mean we might have to wait several episodes before we see Claire travel back in time to seek out Jamie, or will the Season 3 premiere send her back pretty quickly, and fill in the blanks by jumping between time periods, as the Season 2 premiere and finale did? We know it’ll be worth the wait whenever it happens, but here’s hoping the writers aren’t too cruel when it comes to delaying our gratification.

What a nightmare.

What a nightmare.

2. What (or who) does Jamie do in their years apart?

The Season 2 finale revealed that Claire became a surgeon when she returned back to her time, and she obviously had her hands full with Bree (Sophie Skelton) and Frank (Tobias Menzies), but we don’t have much intel on what Jamie was doing in the years after Claire left him. Season 3 will undoubtedly fill us in on his sure-to-be thrilling adventures, but what we really want to know is whether Jamie had a relationship with another woman after he said goodbye to Claire. (The thought is so upsetting, I can barely type it.)

Despite being a dashing ginger dreamboat who certainly never lacked attention from the ladies, Jamie was a virgin when he and Claire met, so it would be sweet to think that he swore off other partners after Claire went back to the future. Then again, TV shows thrive on conflict, and there’s not much drama to be had if Claire comes back after 20 years to find out that her husband has been a perfect, celibate saint while she’s been gone.

Did Jamie fall in love again? (I refuse to even acknowledge the possibility.) Did he have a few casual flings just to take the edge off, believing with absolute certainty that he’d never see his time-traveling wife again? Time will tell, but I’m definitely rooting for the perfect, celibate saint route.

3. How steamy will Season 3 be?

Season 2 featured plenty of political scheming, palace intrigue and bloody battles, but some fans noted that there were far fewer sex scenes than there were in Season 1 — which makes sense, considering that Jamie was dealing with the trauma of being raped and tortured, while Claire was struggling with her growing sense of isolation from her husband as he tried to recover. (Not to mention the devastating loss of their baby.)

But after 20 years separated from their true love, we’ve got to believe that Claire and Jamie have a lot of lost time to make up for in Season 3. They might have to get to know each other all over again, but all those years of longing will probably add up to some spectacular reunion sex, right?

4. What happened to Black Jack Randall?

When last we saw the sadistic Black Jack (Tobias Menzies), he was reluctantly marrying his brother’s lover, Mary Hawkins, in order to secure a future for her and her unborn child (and, handily, for their descendant, Frank Randall). But the history books don’t lie: Claire told Jack that he would die at the Battle of Culloden, so Mary hopefully didn’t have to put up with him for long.

We didn’t see the outcome of that infamous clash in Season 2, but given how much the show has focused on Black Jack’s twisted relationship with Jamie, we’ve got to imagine that there’ll be some closure for the two on Culloden moor. (In fact, this preview photo from Season 3 guarantees it.)

We meet again, Mr. Fraser.

We meet again, Mr. Fraser.

IMAGE: STARZ

5. Will we see Murtagh again?

Jamie’s loyal godfather (and all-around scene-stealer) Murtagh vowed to follow him into battle, come hell or high water — which, given what we know of the Scottish casualties at Culloden, probably didn’t end well for our favorite sidekick. Still, if Jamie survived, maybe there’s a chance his right-hand man did too? Let me have my delusion for a few more months, okay?

6. What’s Claire’s relationship with Frank like when she comes back from the past?

The Season 2 premiere showed us the immediate aftermath of Claire’s return, and Frank was admittedly pretty glad to see her — at least until he discovered that she was pregnant with another man’s child. Then he had to go and smash up a potting shed and get a lecture from Reverend Wakefield to get himself back under control — but we don’t know much about how he and Claire got along after that.

Happy family?

Happy family?

IMAGE: STARZ

Bree made a few vague references to her parents’ strained relationship in the Season 2 finale, so it probably wasn’t all sunshine and roses before Frank died, but did they manage some semblance of being a normal family, at least for Bree’s sake, or were things broken beyond repair after Frank learned that his wife fell in love with another man in the past?

7. How much of Claire’s time as a doctor will we see?

Claire was born to be a surgeon — between her many wartime experiences in WWII and the 18th century, there’s arguably no one better equipped to handle life or death stakes — but will we get to explore her new career path much in Season 3? We’re not expecting the show to turn into The Knick, or anything, but it would be nice to see her rocking her new job — especially since she’s also going to make a new friend, Joe Abernathy, in medical school.

Take a Behind-the-Scenes Tour of the ‘Outlander’ Armoury to Discover Season 3 Secrets!

It’s time to battle the Droughtlander!

We know that many fans are particularly parched during this extended Outlander hiatus, but we want to offer you a small sip of season three secrets.

Last December, we at ET traveled all the way over to Outlander‘s Scotland-based sets and were treated to a special behind-the-scenes tour of the series awesomely intimidating armoury — and now we’re sharing that experience with you, plus an exclusive first-look at season three footage!

EXCLUSIVE: ‘Outlander’ Star Caitriona Balfe Adorably Apologizes for ‘Longer’ Season 3 Hiatus

Outlander‘s official armourer, Jim Elliot, has been the weapons props master since 2014 and has been a key factor in bringing those action-packed battle scenes to life.

Elliot admitted that it was a bit of a “daunting” task to prepare for season three’s Battle of Culloden because it’s one of the biggest (and most highly anticipated!) moments the series has had.

Photo: ET

“We had four trucks of weapons [for the Battle of Culloden,]” Elliot explained. “Seven hundred weapons on a daily basis for two weeks [shooting on the field] and then picks-ups and green screens. It was long days, but enjoyable and I hope it looks great on screen.”

Outlander‘s armoury walls are covered with a massive collection of every weapon imaginable including broadswords, axes, spears and targes, the distinctive circular shields used by Jacobites. The guns are safely under lock and key in nearby containers.

Photo: ET

The massive room is located within the Outlander soundstage in Glasgow, Scotland just outside the doors that lead to the lavish set of the Fraser’s Lallybroch home. (Pssst! The armoury is also close to another set that was created just for season three, but we’re going to stay tight-lipped on that one for now…)

Press play on our exclusive tour above to get a glimpse at the Scottish broadsword they had custom-made for Sam Heughan, plus some special season three sneak peeks of Rupert’s ax from the Battle of Culloden and cave-dwelling Jamie’s bow and arrow!

Season three of Outlander will premiere in September 2017 on Starz.
