Frank and Black Jack Randall might be around as long as #Outlander is — and we don’t necessarily hate it

We already know that we’ll be seeing more Frank (Tobias Menzies) in Season 3 of Outlander than book fans would expect, but it may not be the last we see of Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) first husband, or his evil 18th century ancestor.

Diana Gabaldon’s book Voyager, on which the third season is based, is the last time Claire is in the 1900s. That means there aren’t a lot of pages of Frank’s story left in the book series. The show will already expand on Frank’s presence by exploring what Claire’s life was like with Frank after she returned through the rocks before the Battle of Culloden — pregnant with Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) child — more deeply.

It’s a period that Outlander executive producer Ron Moore says is necessary to understand who Claire is when she learns that Jamie survived Culloden 20 years after the fact.

“The story requires [Frank]’s presence. Claire, from the beginning, was married to Frank and spent the entire first book trying to get back to him,” Moore explained to TVGuide.com at the ATX Television Festival in Austin. “She’s found the love of her life in Jamie Fraser, but there’s still this man that has this hold on her so she feels like she needs to go back. That to me says that’s a really strong character and an important character. To understand Claire, you need to understand the nature of that relationship with Frank.”

Frank remains an important part of the story in Season 3 as we have to learn who Claire and their daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) have become in the time they spent with him in Boston.

“When she returns to the 20th century, Frank raises Brianna. Again, he’s a very important figure in the story,” Moore said. “He is the father figure that Brianna knew as opposed to Jamie. Claire spent 20 years with him before he died. We needed to bring that part of the story forward to really understand how all these things work.”

Voyager marks the last serious mentions of Frank and his 18th century counterpart Black Jack Randall in the Outlander book series. Frank dies in the 1960s and Black Jack is fated to die in the same battle Jamie survives. However, Season 3 may not be the last we see of Claire’s first husband or the man who terrorized her and her husband in the past.

Moore admits that is in part because actor Tobias Menzies does such a tremendous job inhabiting both roles. The show isn’t afraid to embrace future mentions of either character as a chance to bring Menzies back in later seasons.

Outlander Season 3 Spoilers: Claire and Jamie Will Be Apart for a While at the Start of the Season

“Droughtlander” might be ending in under three months, but that doesn’t mean that Outlanderfans are going to see their favorite couple back together when the show returns.

Outlander last left off with Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) separated by 200 years of history. Claire had returned to the 1940s before the Battle of Culloden to protect their unborn child while Jamie went back to fight with his countrymen and presumably die.

It took Claire 20 years in her own timeline to discover that Jamie had managed to live through the bloody battle. She ended the Season 2 finale declaring to her now adult daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) that they have to go back to find Jamie. Unfortunately, the search for him will not be that easy.

“We’re going to keep them apart for a while,” executive producer Ron Moore teased to TVGuide.com at the ATX Television Festival in Austin.

Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, OutlanderCaitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, OutlanderClaire and Jamie’s separation tracks with how Diana Gabaldon’s third book in the Outlanderseries, on which the show is based, plays out. Moore admits that some structural changes are being made to the story, but reuniting Claire and Jamie right off the bat is not one of them.

“The majority of the major events are in the season, but we are probably going to reorder them and present them slightly differently,” Moore said. “The third book is a clean narrative as opposed to the second book –which was a very complicated narrative. It still went to Jamie’s storyline for a very long time and then Claire catches up.”

The beginning of the season will do a lot to fill in the story of Claire’s life with Frank (Tobias Menzies) in Boston after she returned through the stones at the end of Season 2.

“One of the things we wanted to do was talk about what Claire was doing in those 20 years as well,” Moore said. “The way we’ve structured the season allows you to experience both [Jamie and Claire’s lives] at the same time.”

That may sound like terrible news to some fans, but luckily Claire will have some assistance in finding her way back to Jamie. Brianna and Roger (Richard Rankin) will be there to help her figure out what Jamie was doing in Scotland after he escaped the battle. Helping Claire will also help bring the young lovebirds closer together.

Outlander season 3 will solve a major book mystery, says author Diana Gabaldon

As we continue to wait for Outlander season three (why do we have to hold out until September? WHY?) author Diana Gabaldon has been dropping hints about what to expect when Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) return to our TV screens.

“I do think that season three is going to be remarkably strong. I’ve seen the first nine episodes now put together and they’re fabulous, the first six especially are very close to the book,” the author tells RadioTimes.com.

“There are things that Claire told her daughter in flashback that we now see more or less in real life. They have expanded some of those,” Gabaldon explains.

But it’s the little “tweaks and additions” the writers have made that sound the most intriguing – could they solve one of the books’ biggest mysteries?

“There has always been the question in the books as to whether Frank was or was not unfaithful to Claire during their marriage and I’ve always left it ambiguous,” says Gabaldon. “People make up their own minds, generally on the basis of whether they like Frank or not.”

The show will finally give readers a definitive answer to that question because the writers have had to “come down on one side or the other”. And is the author happy with the side they’ve picked?

“I think the TV show treats him very fairly,” she says. We’ll have to wait until September 2017 to decide if we agree.

‘Outlander’ Filming Locations: 6 Castles Jamie And Claire Fans Can Visit In Scotland

“Outlander” does a beautiful job of showing off Scotland, and it isn’t all TV magic. The Starz show, based on Diana Gabaldon’s novels, actually films in Scotland and regularly leaves the studio to shoot at real locations. The drama takes place in the 18th century, so castles are often involved. If you’re heading to the Jamie Fraser’s country, you should check out these historic fortresses.

Doune Castle — You might recognize it as Castle Leoch, the seat of Clan MacKenzie. The outside was used in the series, but the inside will look a bit different. Interior shots were filmed in a studio.

Showrunner Ronald D. Moore chose the castle, located in Doune, because of its size as well as its condition. “It’s one of the best examples of a medieval castle still left in all of Europe, in terms of preservation,” Moore told Condé Nast Traveler. “The structure remains very close to when it was originally built, in the 13th century. The courtyard is great, there’s a rampart you can walk on, and I realized there wasn’t much I had to do to it digitally. It’s also where they shot ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail.’ If you go straight up to the tower, you will often hear tourists at the top shouting out lines.”

Outlander filming locations“Outlander” has used many Scottish castles as filming locations. Photo: Starz

Blackness Castle — This castle has a fitting name. It served as the base for Black Jack (Tobias Menzies). Don’t worry, we’re pretty sure there aren’t any sadistic captains there now. This location is particularly easy to visit from Edinburgh.

Aberdour Castles — This castle on the Fife coast served as the monastery where Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) brought Jamie (Sam Heughan) after he was assaulted by Black Jack at the end of Season 1. It’s one of the oldest masonry castles in Scotland.

Dean Castle — Located in Kilmarnock, this is where Jamie and Claire tried to convince Lord Lovat to help Charles Stuart in Season 2. The 14th century castle has more amenities these days with an urban farm, adventure playground, tearoom and more to keep tourists busy.

Drummond Castle — “Outlander” fans are actually more interested in what’s outside of this historic building in Perthshire. The gardens were used in “Outlander” Season 2 to stand in for the gardens of Versailles. It’s easy to see why. The elaborate greenery makes for a stunning photo op.

Balgonie Castle — This castle in Fife was used as Eldridge Manor. Claire recovers form a wolf attack here in Season 1 and figures out how to save Jamie from Black Jack using cattle.

Fans planning to tour Scotland in the near future probably won’t be running into the cast. Heughan, Balfe and the rest of their co-stars are currently filming in Cape Town. The South African location is standing in for Jamaica in “Outlander” Season 3. Jamie and Claire will journey to the Carribean after they reunite on the show.

Even though there isn’t much chance of running into the stars, visiting Jamie and Claire’s haunts is a perfect way to get through the long hiatus. “Outlander” Season 2 ended in July 2016 and the show won’t come back until September.

“Outlander” Season 3 returns to Starz in September. An exact premiere date has not been announced yet.

Scotland’s £250m film studio gets green light from Scottish Government

Developers have been given the go ahead to create a film studio complex on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

Scottish ministers have granted planning permission for a large film and television studio on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

The decision to back the Pentland Studios projects overturns an earlier recommendation from a Scottish Government reporter that permission be refused.

The proposal was “called in” by the Scottish Government after Midlothian Council failed to make a ruling on the application, which was originally submitted in 2014.

As well as six sound stages, the £250m studio plans also include two Hollywood-style backlots and a 180-room hotel, reports The Scotsman .

It comes after a industry buff claimed Scotland had missed out on multi-
million-pound productions like Game of Thrones and Star Trek because of the hold-up in approving the project.

Empty warehouses had to be transformed to get them up to scratch for productions like Outlander, T2 Trainspotting and Avengers: Infinity War, which is currently being filmed in the capital.
