Synopsis: Roger’s diligent search for Brianna pays off when he finds her in Wilmington, but their romantic reunion comes to an abrupt halt when she discovered pertinent information that he intentionally kept from her.
The surgeon who arrives and suggests (literally) that Claire should have blown smoke up the patient’s rear was one of the most unusual details discovered in research. That’s actually how they treated hernias back then – or at least one of the ways.
In this time, play audiences would both heckle and praise the actors out loud – and the actors would often pause in their delivery of a line to heckle them right back! It was an expected thing, and part of the fun.
What Governor Tryon says here – that the play was written by a native son of Wilmington – is true. The play Jamie and Claire are about to see, The Prince of Parthia, was written by Thomas Godfrey, a resident of Wilmington, NC, in 1765. It is the first play to be written by a Colonial American and produced in the colonies.
You came all this way for a play? In this time, it would have taken someone upwards of two weeks to get to Wilmington, NC, from Fraser’s Ridge, near what is now Boone, NC.
This “theater” was actually built by Outlander’s art department inside the sanctuary of St. Andrew’s in the Square, a beautiful 18th church in Glasgow.
It’s a little known fact that Governor Tryon, in actual fact, took part in a bungled plot to kidnap George Washington near the start of the American Revolution.
The term “handfast” likely comes into English from the Old Norse handfesta, meaning “to strike a bargain by joining hands.” Similarly, Old Frisian has hondfestinge and Middle Low German has hantvestinge.
The writers and various production teams spent a lot of time researching what George Washington would have looked like in this time period. The episode is set in 1769, eleven years after the end of the French and Indian War and six years prior to the start of the Revolutionary War, a time in which Washington was a planter and a representative in the Virginia House of Burgesses.
William Shakespeare’s As You Like It was written in 1599, which means it was already 170 years old when Tryon quotes it here.
In the book, Marsali didn’t come to America from the islands until after she had the baby, Germaine (not Jeremiah). It was decided that she was to stay in Hispaniola as traveling by ship during pregnancy would be too much. Fergus went back for Marsali and the baby after they reached Wilmington. Fergus and Marsali name the baby Germaine.
The producers hired a local theater director to direct and stage these portions of the play. Right before rehearsals began, they scripted the audience banter (the “heckling”) as well.
Governor Tryon is played by Tim Downie, and this is his second role alongside Sam Heughan. The first was a series of Tennent’s Lager ads where the two became fast friends after the eruption of an Icelandic volcano forced them to abandon their flight plans and drive across Europe to get to the Czech Republic where the commercial was filming.
In the book and in an early draft of the script, there was a donkey inside this workshop where Brianna and Roger find some privacy.
