OUTLANDER season four is due to explode onto screens in November when viewers will see a whole new collision in the Fraser family when Brianna Fraser arrives in the 18th Century to reunite with her parents Claire and Jamie Fraser. But bosses have now warned that the new season will feature a distressing rape storyline.

WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Outlander season four.

In the middle of Hollywood’s current #MeToo and #TimesUp climate, the STARZ time travel romance has had to make some tough decisions about some of its more difficult storylines.

Outlander’s fourth season is set to explore a rape storyline unlike any the show has portrayed so far, and it not only involves an extremely prominent character but will affect the future of the series as a whole.

Offering an explanation as to how the period drama will tackle the scene and those going forward, producers have promised a “different” approach.

Fans are already aware Brianna (played by Sophie Skelton) will make her own journey through time in a bid to find and warn her parents Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) about imminent danger.

But as she attempts to navigate her journey across Colonial America a tragedy strikes and Brianna is raped by the psychotic newcomer Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speleers), an Irish pirate and smuggler.

Outlander has been no stranger to scenes of rape and abuse, particularly the first series when Jamie underwent harrowing torment from Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies).

Season two also saw young boy Fergus (Romann Berrux) raped by the unhinged Dragoons’ captain and Claire suffered at the hands of King Louis while attempting to bargain for her husband’s freedom in France.

But while many of those moments were in isolation, albeit portrayed sensitively, Brianna’s storyline will continue on into the rest of the season.

Speaking about the difficulty in portraying such scenes while staying true to their beliefs, creator Ronald D. Moore admitted: “We’ve always been guided by that principle [#TimesUp].
